From Bare Ground to Blooming Hope: Johanna Mafuyana Garden Transforms Umguza Ward 19

What was once a dusty, unused plot in Johanna Mafuyana, Umguza Ward 19, is now bursting with life, colour, and opportunity. Thanks to a transformative initiative by SOS Children’s Villages in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo location, the newly launched solar-powered community garden has become a powerful symbol of what communities can achieve when given the right tools and support.

The two-hectare piece of land, generously donated by Village Head Mr. Khumalo, stood idle until SOS Children’s Villages in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo location stepped in, by installing a solar-powered borehole, fencing, garden tools, and high-quality seedlings. Today, fifty community members from Hilltop, Redleaf, and Shavail are not only feeding their families, but generating income and restoring hope for a better future.

“From the very beginning, SOS Children’s Villages believed in us,” said Ms. Sizani, the project chairperson. “Today, we stand tall with pride and purpose. Our lives have been transformed. We can now pay school fees, put food on the table, and meet our families’ needs with dignity.”

The garden’s first harvest was lush green cabbages, that not only fed families but also marked the start of a new chapter of income generation and sustainability. The group has already secured a market for their produce, with profits reinvested into meeting children’s educational needs.

Representing Hon. Richard Moyo, Mr. Mthimkhulu praised the initiative, urging the community to take ownership: “SOS has done so much for our people. Let’s safeguard this project and use it to build a better future.” Councillor Mrs. Gumpo echoed this, calling SOS “a true partner in development.”

A tour of the flourishing garden left many in awe of the transformation and from barren land to a symbol of resilience and hope. Community members now envision growing this into a thriving agribusiness, with plans to diversify into tomatoes, onions, and exportable crops like chillies.

What started as a small garden is now a powerful seed of change. Through initiatives like this, SOS Children’s Villages in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo location continues to empower communities to grow from dependency to self-reliance, one harvest at a time.
