Household Resilience Through Embracing Green Energy: The Case of Five Villages in Hwedza District

In Hwedza District’s Wards 1, 2, and 14, a new dawn of clean energy and resilience has begun. Through the SOS Children’s Villages Climate Change Resilience Project, in partnership with Lanforce Energy, five biogas digesters were successfully installed between 9 and 19 September 2025, transforming the lives of 26 families and empowering 24 youths with practical green energy skills.

The project follows an 80:20 approach, where SOS Children’s Villages Zimbabwe provided prefabricated biogas digesters and technical expertise from Lanforce Energy, while the community contributed manpower, water, cow dung, and poles. This joint effort fostered strong ownership, sustainability, and unity among the participating villages.

For many households, access to clean energy was once a distant dream. Now, families are not only cooking using biogas but are also benefiting from liquid manure, a valuable by-product that enhances soil fertility and boosts crop yields. This innovation is reducing the cost of living while improving agricultural productivity and environmental health.

“This project has changed our lives,” says Mrs. Muringi, one of the beneficiaries. “We used to struggle to find firewood, but now we have gas right at home. The slurry is also helping our gardens flourish.”

The youths who participated in the installation have gained hands-on experience in renewable energy technologies, opening up new pathways for green jobs and sustainable livelihoods.

From vulnerability to resilience, the people of Hwedza have demonstrated that when communities and partners work together, lasting change is possible. As the biogas flames light up kitchens and farms across the district, they also ignite hope for a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant future.
