In an era where digital skills are essential for employment and entrepreneurship. SOS Children’s Villages Zimbabwe, in partnership with Learnio and Bosch, has taken a significant step in bridging the digital divide. Through an innovative ICT training program, young Zimbabweans are gaining valuable skills in web design and development, and digital marketing. Ensuring the youth are equipped for the modern job market.
A Pathway to Digital Empowerment
The program was introduced in Zimbabwe as part of a broader initiative that began in Benin in 2021. With a hybrid learning model, participants receive both online training and on-site mentorship, ensuring they gain hands-on experience in digital skills. The goal is to prepare young people for employment or entrepreneurship in the rapidly evolving digital sector.
By August 2023, 73 youths in Zimbabwe had successfully completed the program, with an impressive 28% securing jobs even before graduation. This highlights the effectiveness of the training in providing practical, in-demand skills. Many of these graduates have found opportunities in freelance work, startups, and established companies in need of digital expertise.
Enhancing ICT Infrastructure
One of the key aspects of this initiative has been improving ICT infrastructure in Zimbabwe. Recognizing the challenges of unreliable electricity and internet access, the program has introduced solar power backups and provided necessary digital equipment. These enhancements ensure that students can learn without interruptions, making the training more effective and accessible.
Fostering Economic and Social Impact
The ICT training program is more than just an educational initiative; it is a catalyst for economic and social transformation. By equipping young people with digital skills, it enables them to secure employment, start their own businesses, and contribute to the country’s digital economy. Additionally, the program is promoting gender inclusivity by encouraging more young women to pursue careers in technology.
With growing interest and proven success, the partnership between SOS Children’s Villages, Learnio, and Bosch is set to continue making a lasting impact on Zimbabwean youth. By providing relevant digital skills, this initiative is opening doors to new opportunities and fostering a brighter future for many young Zimbabweans.
Looking Ahead
The success of the program in Zimbabwe underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing youth unemployment and skill shortages. As more young people gain access to these opportunities, the potential for Zimbabwe’s digital economy to thrive grows significantly. With continued support and expansion, this initiative could serve as a model for digital skill development across the region.
